On First Looking Into Chapman's Homer Analysis John Keats ES

A sonnet is a poem which expresses a thought or idea and develops it, often cleverly and wittily. The change in role can also be demonstrated by comparing the two geographical locations mentioned in the poem. ‘Darien, mentioned after the volta, is in Central America. The contrast between the old world and the new show that Keats feels he is now making his own new, fresh, unseen literature, not exploring the work of others. This is also, in its length and the way in which it diverges from the literal subject of the poem, a “Homeric” metaphor. The title refers to George Chapman, a contemporary of Shakespeare, who wrote a translation of Homer’s Odyssey.

The sonnet genre is often, although not always, about ideals or hypothetical situations. It reaches back to the Medieval Romances, where a woman is loved and idealised by a worshipping admirer. For example, Sir Philip Sydney in the Astrophil and Stella sonnet sequence wrote in this mode. Poems were circulated within groups of educated intellectuals and they did not necessarily reflect the poet’s true emotions, but were a form of intellectual showing-off! This may not have been true of all; it is a matter of academic debate today. It is generally believed, however, that Shakespeare’s sonnets were autobiographical.

The Full Text of “On First Looking into Chapman's Homer”

As the story goes, a twenty-something-year-old Keats read a translation of Homer’s works by Elizabethan poet and dramatist George Chapman. On a night in 1816, he read the work with his friend Charles Cowden Clarke; when Clarke awoke the next morning, he found that Keats had written “On First Looking into Chapman’s Homer” and left it for him as a gift. The common rhyme is an “old” sound, such as words, hold, gold told, and bold, which define the octave of the poem. The meter is also present in the latter part of the piece with alternations between eyes and skies, or men and ken. The challenge is manifested in the fact that the line number is predetermined to be six plus six, and each section needs to have its own theme, context, as well as meters. Therefore, by understanding and seeing these format rules of an Italian sonnet, it becomes more apparent how challenging it is to create such a poem.

But his reading of Chapman’s translation of Homer’s epics gave him greater pleasure than he received from earlier readings. He was highly inspired by his reading of Homer through Chapman. Keats says that he has read a number of books of adventurous and romantic tales. His reading has been like traveling in the different countries of the mind – the countries of imagination and fancy. They have given him pleasure as much as the sight of the realm of gold would give a poor man. Further, Keats says that he has explored the noble and pleasure-giving world of adventurous romances.

He never traveled to Darién but may have seen the Pacific sometime after his conquest of the Aztec Empire or during his 1524–1526 visit to Honduras. Later during his governorship of Mexico, Cortés was a major explorer of the Pacific coast of Mexico and Baja California. At the break in the sonnet — in Italian after the first eight lines, in English after twelve lines — there is a ‘turn’ or volta, after which there will be a change or new perspective on the preceding idea.

Chapman was a contemporary of Shakespeare in the late 16th and early 17th centuries. Shakespeare actually probably read Chapman's translations; that's probably where he got his Homer. John Keats wrote a poem called 'On First Looking into Chapman's Homer.' Explore why Keats wrote this sonnet, what the structure, subject, and meaning of it is, and also discover the features of a sonnet. On First Looking Into Chapman’s Homer was the second poem that John Keats (1795–1821) had published, although it was far from being the first that he had written.

He also makes it part of himself; absorbing it shows the extent to which he is devoted to art – he literally lives and breathes it. His use of an adjective in place of a noun “pure serene” is evidence that he struggled within the restrictions of our language, which would eventually prompt him to move onto Shakespearian formed sonnets. The poet begins his poem with the depiction of his travel ‘in the realms of gold’. It is a symbolic statement meaning that he has read about the riches of cultures and civilization which are as precious as gold in the world of literature. "“On First Looking Into Chapman’s Homer” by John Keats." IvyPanda, 5 Dec. 2022, ivypanda.com/essays/on-first-looking-into-chapmans-homer-by-john-keats/. This is the lead-up to his revelation moment, which comes, not coincidentally, when the sestet starts - that's that turn that we talked about before.

Keats Tweets a Sonnet

When he talks about traveling in the 'realms of gold', he's actually doing two things. It's just like 'the pagemaster', and these 'realms' are like libraries, or the books themselves. But he's also making an allusion to Odysseus, the hero of Homer's Odyssey, (remember, he's reading a translation of Homer) who traveled a lot in that tale. The reference to Apollo works well with both meanings, because Apollo is the Greek god of poetry, so that goes with the book/library meaning.

Considered the poet’s first mature poem, the sonnet was inspired by Keats’s having pored over a 1616 folio edition of George Chapman’s English translations of the Iliad and the Odyssey. The speaker offers an interesting speculation about this delight in having discovered the Chapman translation. He is likely attempting to demonstrate both his knowledge of science and history with such musing upon his own enthusiasm.

The metre usually chosen for sonnets is iambic pentameter, that is five iambs or metrical feet per line, where a iamb is one unstressed followed by one stressed syllable. The effect is stately and rhythmic, and usually creates a solemn, dignified mood.

Home Improvement TV series Wikipedia

From season 4 until the end of the series in 1999, an anthropomorphic version of the logo was used in different types of animation. Al's mother wants to join Al & Ilene for New Years; Ilene gives Al an ultimatum. Tool Time is up for an award, and Tim, Jill, Al, and Ilene attend the banquet party.

An avid fan of the Detroit professional sports teams, Tim wears Lions, Pistons, Red Wings, and Tigers clothing in numerous instances, and many plots revolve around the teams. He is a former salesman for the fictional Binford Tool company, and he is very much a cocky, overambitious, accident-prone know-it-all. Witty but flippant, Tim jokes around a lot, even at inappropriate times, much to the dismay of his wife.

Series overview

Home Improvement is an American television sitcom starring Tim Allen that aired on ABC from September 17, 1991 to May 25, 1999 with a total of 204 half-hour episodes spanning eight seasons. The series was created by Matt Williams, Carmen Finestra, and David McFadzean. Despite not being a favorite with critics, it was one of the most watched sitcoms in the United States during the 1990s, winning many awards. The series launched Allen's acting career and was the start of the television career of Pamela Anderson, who was part of the recurring cast for the first two seasons. However, he was still busy with a movie that was in the middle of production at the time the first pilot was to be shot. Therefore, the producers set out to cast an alternate character that would stand in as Tim's co-host for the pilot, or for however many episodes were required until Tobolowsky was available.

The test involves Mark holding a live tadpole in his mouth for three seconds, but he accidentally swallows it.

In early seasons, Wilson was always seen standing on the other side of Tim's backyard fence as the two engaged in conversation, usually with Wilson offering sage advice as Tim grappled with his problems. In later seasons, a running joke developed in which more and more creative means were used to prevent Wilson's face below the eyes from ever being seen by the audience. Also, in later seasons, Wilson's full name was revealed to be Wilson W. Wilson, Jr. Beginning in season 2, Home Improvement began each episode with a cold open, which features the show's logo during the teaser.

These were usually sent by the schools to the show for him to wear during an episode. Because Allen considered Michigan his home state, the rule was that only Michigan schools would get the free advertising. There were two notable exceptions to the general rule that Tim only supported Michigan educational institutions on the show. First, during the episode "Workshop 'Til You Drop" Tim wears a Wofford College sweatshirt. Second, during the episode "The Wood, the Bad and the Hungry" Tim wears an Owens Community College sweatshirt.

As mentioned above, the first pilot was produced in April 1991, with Frances Fisher playing Jill Taylor. Fisher, primarily known as a dramatic actress, was well qualified for the co-starring role but was viewed by the studio audience as not being comedic enough, and too serious in her line delivery. The producers tried to work with Fisher on adapting to the situation comedy setting, but shortly after the pilot wrapped post-production, they decided to recast her. S seventh season until Tim's last line in the series finale—the last two words ever spoken on the show.

Richardson was offered $25 million to do a ninth season; Allen was offered $50 million. The two declined the offer and the series came to an end as a result. Before the first pilot was shot, actor John Bedford Lloyd was in the running for one of two roles; that of Tim's Tool Time co-host (originally named "Glen") and the role of Wilson. Bedford Lloyd eventually got the part of Wilson, but his agent later made claims that the actor was unaware that most of his scenes would require his face to be partially hidden behind a fence. For this reason, the crew received news just one day prior to taping the first pilot that Bedford Lloyd had dropped out. Casting immediately contacted the other actor considered for the role, Earl Hindman.

Brad, popular and athletic, was often the moving factor, who engaged before thinking, a tendency which regularly landed him in trouble. Randy, a year younger, was the comedian of the pack, known for his quick thinking, wisecracks, and smart mouth. The casting department auditioned Richard Karn, for what would be his first major appearance on a TV sitcom; the character of Al Borland was created from there. In the show's eighth and final season, the middle child Randy left for an environmental study program in Costa Rica in the episode "Adios", which aired on September 29, 1998. This was done because Jonathan Taylor Thomas reportedly wanted to take time off to focus on his academics. His last appearance on Home Improvement was the eighth season Christmas episode "Home for the Holidays", which aired on December 8, 1998. He did not return to the show for the series finale , only appearing in archived footage. During its eight-season run, the show always finished in the top 10 in the Nielsen ratings during a season, despite never making the #1 slot (its highest finish was a second-place spot in the show's third season; behind 60 Minutes).

Home Improvement had been in the works between Tim Allen and the writing/producing team of Carmen Finestra, David McFadzean, and Matt Williams since the summer of 1990. Originally, the project's proposed title was Hammer Time, both a play on the catchphrase made popular by artist MC Hammer and the name of the fictional fix-it show within the series, which was also called Hammer Time. By the time ABC committed to the project in early 1991, Allen and his team had already changed the title to Home Improvement. The show hosted by Tim Taylor in the shooting script for Home Improvement was still called Hammer Time when the first pilot with Frances Fisher was filmed in April 1991.

Season 7 (1997–

Tim and the boys visit the hardware store where Harry and Al are working. The boys want a pocket knife, and after they leave, the knife is just gone. After eating Polish food, Tim's stomach is bothering him so he stays up all night watching old Tool Time episodes.

Anderson did reprise the role of Lisa on the sixth-season finale episode "The Kiss and the Kiss-Off", which aired on May 20, 1997. Jill gets a good grade on a psychology paper and starts to give advice to the father of Randy's girlfriend. When talking it over with Wilson and Judith, they start to disagree. Everyone is stunned when Tim impulsively sells his hot rod to a pizza magnate - especially Brad, who helped him build it, so Tim and Brad try and talk the millionaire into selling it back. Meanwhile, Randy is embarrassed that Jill still goes along with him when shopping for clothes.

Richardson was offered $25 million to do a ninth season; Allen was offered double that. The two declined, and Home Improvement ended after eight seasons and 203 episodes. Tool Time was conceived as a parody of the PBS home-improvement show This Old House. Tim and Al are caricatures of the two principal cast members of This Old House, host Bob Vila and master carpenter Norm Abram. Al Borland has a beard and always wears plaid shirts when taping an episode, reflecting Norm Abram's appearance on This Old House.

In the first two years of the show, Pamela Anderson played the part of Tim's Tool Girl, Lisa, on Tool Time, but left the show to focus on her role on the syndicated series Baywatch. Her last episode as a series regular was "The Great Race", which aired on May 19, 1993. Tim's new assistant, electrician Heidi Keppert, played by Debbe Dunning, replaced Anderson as the Tool Time Girl for the following third season, starting with "Maybe Baby", which aired on September 15, 1993. Dunning had previously appeared in the episode "Overactive Glance" from season 2 where she played an obsessive Tool Time fan named Kiki.

Season 1 (1991–

Based on the stand-up comedy of Tim Allen, Home Improvement made its debut on ABC on September 17, 1991, and was one of the highest-rated sitcoms for almost the entire decade. It went to No. 2 in the ratings during the 1993–1994 season, the same year Allen had the No. 1 book (Don't Stand Too Close to a Naked Man) and film . Tim is awarded an honorary doctorate by his old college, bewildering Jill as she works for her own master's degree. However, Tim begins to wonder whether his school's reasons have little to do with respect for his show.

Jill, Tim's wife, is loving and sophisticated, but she is not exempt from dumb moves herself. Family life is boisterous for the Taylors, with the two oldest children, Brad and Randy, tormenting the much younger Mark, all while continually testing and pestering each other. Such play happened especially throughout the first three seasons, and it was revisited only occasionally until Jonathan Taylor Thomas left at the beginning of the eighth season. During the show's final season, Brad and Mark became much closer due to Randy's absence.

Karn guest starred in two episodes of Tim Allen's 2010s ABC/Fox sitcom Last Man Standing in 2013. Thomas has also appeared on Last Man Standing, and has directed episodes of the series. Seasons 5 and 6 accidentally contain some slightly edited episodes, most likely due to using syndication prints. And the episode "The Feminine Mistake" from season 6, doesn't contain the 3D version of the episode as originally aired on ABC, instead using the 2D version as seen in syndication. Throughout the show, Tim Taylor would often be wearing sweatshirts or T-shirts from various Michigan-based colleges and universities.

While the Taylors are out of the house, Brad and his friend throw a Halloween party. When the family travels to the wedding of Jill's favorite cousin, Tim and the boys are determined to use all their free time in outdoor activities. Jill's sister Carrie, a globetrotting photographer, comes to visit, and their different paths in life create conflict. Meanwhile, Tim can't seem to stop arguing with his brother Marty, and the strife even spills over to create friction between Al and his brother Cal.

The catalyst for the series' name change was to represent the aspect of fixing problems within the family and home life, as well as the use of mechanics and tools. Once the second phase of the pilot was produced, with all the actors that made the final cut into the series , Tim Taylor's Hammer Time became Tool Time. Each episode includes Tim's own Binford-sponsored home improvement show, called Tool Time, a show-within-a-show. Bud talks Tim into buying his Pistons season tickets, which cost $4000. When he gets home and talks with his sons about his purchase they're excited at first, until they find out he didn't discuss it with Jill, his wife. When Jill gets home and finds out about what Tim spent on the tickets things get a little hot around the Taylor house hold.
